How can this cost my business nothing? +
The Group IUL is structured as a voluntary employee benefit through a Section 125 Cafeteria Plan. Employees elect to redirect a portion of their pre-tax compensation toward their IUL premium. Because this reduces their taxable income, your FICA payroll tax liability drops in tandem — often saving your business more in payroll taxes than you were spending on traditional benefits. The net result is a $0 out-of-pocket cost, often with actual savings.
Is participation mandatory for employees? +
No — Group IUL is entirely voluntary. Employees choose whether to enroll and how much premium to contribute. In practice, when the benefit is properly explained (which I handle), enrollment rates are very high because employees immediately see the value compared to a standard 401K. There’s no pressure and no obligation.
What happens to the policy if an employee leaves? +
The policy belongs to the employee — not the company. It’s fully portable. If they leave, they take the policy with them and continue paying premiums directly. This is a key selling point for employees: unlike a 401K with vesting schedules or a pension tied to the employer, an IUL is theirs from day one, forever.
How many employees do I need to offer a Group IUL? +

How is this different from a traditional 401K? +
In almost every meaningful way. A 401K grows tax-deferred but is fully taxed on withdrawal, has required minimum distributions starting at 73, penalizes early access before 59½, exposes employees to full market losses, has no death benefit, and offers no living benefits. An IUL grows tax-free, has no RMDs, can be accessed at any age without penalty, has a 0% floor protecting against market losses, includes a death benefit, and comes with 18 living benefits. The only advantage a 401K has is an employer match — which is separate from the IUL.
